History of the Faculty

The Faculty of Health Sciences is one of the youngest faculties of our University where teaching began in 1990.

The Faculty of Health Sciences was established as a part of the Medical University of Pécs by the Minister of Health and Social Welfare in 1989 in order to offer courses for health care specialists leading up to the BSc degree. Today, after the integration process leading to the University of Pécs, the Faculty of Health Sciences is an independent organizational unit among the ten faculties of the University.

Students can choose from eight types of specialisation. Post-graduate courses are also offered by the Faculty and it is also actively engaged in the in-service programmes given to various actors of health services.

The up-to-date education technology installed at the faculty contributes to the high quality of both theoretical and practical education. Students are strongly encouraged to take part in scientific activities as well.

Thanks to the recent changing of the structure of the Faculty - establishing the Institutions and Departments, according to the disciplines offered by the campuses -, improving and updating of the syllabuses, the introduction of the ECTS based programme of instruction, the education has been given a higher value. The Faculty has launched MSc course in nursing in the year 2000 and in health visiting in the year 2003. Thus, a linear structure of education has been established, providing the graduates of the Faculty of Health Sciences with education of high quality even by European standards. As of today we have 7 MSc courses running and it is planned to establish further master’s programmes.

Since 1 March 2006 the institute is functioning as a University Faculty by the name of Faculty of Health Sciences.

Graduates of the Faculty of Health Sciences have a level of competence in their own field that is fully compatible with EU standards. They are fully capable to work as competent team members in areas of health care provision and social care systems. In the EU, there are seven automatically acknowledged special fields.

The leaders of the Faculty attach great importance to facilitating and encouraging students with outstanding performance to join the teaching staff after graduation. We have connections with many universities abroad, so our students can complete part of their studies in other partner institutions abroad.

An increasing number of our students join the Student Researchers’ Association established in 1993 and achieve outstanding results at regional and national conferences.

Our highly qualified teaching staff can use a high-quality infrastructural background (computer rooms, terminals, internet, studio, language laboratory and modern teaching devices) efficiently to transmit their knowledge in the laboratories and demonstration rooms. Students also benefit from well-equipped dormitories with a sauna (Pécs), a kitchen, a gym and a library.

The Faculty has a variety of connections with partner universities abroad concerning a range of courses so students have the opportunity to complete a part of their studies internationally.

This Faculty is one of the youngest and most dynamically developing institutes of the University, functioning as part of the University of Pécs since 1 January 2000. The Faculty has campuses in Pécs, Kaposvár, Szombathely and Zalaegerszeg where good co-operation has been established with the local teaching hospitals and social institutions.
