The University of Pécs (UP) was ranked 201-300th in the latest international ranking of the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE), based in London, published on Wednesday. UP was ranked the best Hungarian university compared to more than 1,000 universities from 94 countries.
The University of Pécs was included in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2021 and became one of the 1,115 best institutions in 94 countries. The London-based company evaluated the institutions along the lines of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. UP was placed in the same category as universities (201-300), such as the Sorbonne in France and the University of Massachusetts in the USA, and has achieved a better position than higher education institutions such as the University of Parma and the Tokyo University of Science.
Looking at other Hungarian universities in addition to UP, the University of Debrecen and the University of Szeged (both 301-400), Semmelweis (401-600), ELTE and István Széchenyi University (both 601-800) were added to the list. Anglo-Saxon institutions dominate the top five, with three Australian universities and one university in the UK and Canada each, the first being the University of Manchester.
"Of course we are pleased with the result, however, there is still room for progress, and there is an opportunity to do so as well, because we have excellent academic staff and students," emphasized Attila Miseta, rector of UP. "And our background conditions, thanks to EU and domestic support and our successful development opportunities, are getting better and better. I would like all the faculty of the institution to participate effectively in the enhancement of the university's reputation!" said the rector of the institution.
